The American Roulette Game
American Roulette is played exactly like the European version except that the American roulette is played like the original roulette game with two "house slots" (the 0 and the 00). In Europe, this was changed to a single house slot (the 0) while in America the original form remains. American roulette thus perpetuates the American Paradigm of having everything the same as in Europe - only bigger. Although this means that American roulette begins with worse odds for the player, there are some perks as well. These are described in the following paragraph. Aside from that, many casinos in America do host European style roulette wheels for those who want them. These are usually the higher rolling tables.
American Roulette Odds
Although a larger roulette wheel with more slots works against the player, there are other ways in which the house improves the players' odds. One of these is the ruling in the case of a "draw". This refers to the situation when an even valued bet is made and the spin lands on one of the two house numbers. In many European roulette games this is simply a loss for the player. In American roulette, the player is often allowed to choose from getting half his money back or continuing the wager for another round (similar to the French La-Partage). The house can allow more favorable rules for the player because of the initial advantage.
American Roulette Betting Spreads
Although the American roulette wheel offers the classic even numbered wagers, it also offers a wide variety of other wagers as well. Players can bet on various combinations of 1,2,3,5,6 and 12 numbers. This enables the player to choose how much he would like to risk at every spin and how much money he can hope to win on the spin. Of course the best payouts are for single number wagers but these are also the most difficult to achieve. There are various combination strategies which attempt to cover as much of the board as possible while still according the player occasional wins worth earning.
